My friends Jake and Anny
from USA have given me some
of their timetables to show here.
The typical USA timetable has 7-8 periods per day (although many schools are moving to a 4 period day) and each day is the same as any other day. So if you have period 1, Yr10- Maths, you have that class period 1 every day! Then in semester 2 most of the students study different subjects and a different timetable is constructed.
So timetables in the USA are equivalent to our Elective line construction here in Australia; in the USA the elective lines are your timetable. This is very different to the way we timetable here in Australia.
The obvious question I had for Jake is how to accommodate part time teachers. He said the usual technique is to give them periods 1 and 2 or periods 6 and 7 free. So part timers get the morning or afternoon free, but must teach every day.
They run doubles for some practical subjects.
Staff teaching loads are usually 6-7 periods out of 8 periods per day. This is close to teaching loads in Australia which are about 24 periods/30 periods per week = 80%.
